Saawariya v/s Om Shanti Om on November 9, 2007
This was the case of superstar (SRK) against debutante (Ranbir and Sonam), masala against melodrama and fun filmmaker Farah against serious director
Sanjay Leela Bhansali. And the result is this - Om Shanti Om, which was SRK's musical, a light -hearted tribute to Hindi films gutted Sanjay Leela Bhansali's
depressing blue hued saga on unrequited love. OSO became the biggest hit and Saawariya became the biggest disaster of 2007.
Don v/s Jaan-e-mann on October 20, 2006
Khan (SRK) v/s Khan (Salman), cult film remake (Don) v/s musical (Jaan-e-mann) and established director (Farhan Akhtar) v/s debutant Shirish Kunder
Result: SRK ko box office pe harana mushkil hi nahi, naamumkin hai. This is something the producers of Jaan-e-mann should have been aware about. SRK's
andaaz, slick stunts, peppy music and the twist in the story made Farhan Akhtar's Don a hit. So, the makers of Don had a smashing Diwali, whereas
Jaan-e-mann ke producer ka diwaala nikal gaya! People couldn't figure out what was happening in the mish-mash of a wannabe musical starring Salman,
Preity and Akshay. And so, it sank at the BO.
Veer Zaara v/s Aitraaz and Naach
Star (Akshay) v/s Superstar (SRK) v/s struggler (Abhishek), romantic saga (VZ) v/s thriller (Aitraaz) v/s indie film (Naach) and romantic stalwart (Yash
Chopra) v/s thriller experts (Abbas-Mastan) v/s eccentric filmmaker (RGV)
Result: Veer Zaara became a blockbuster, Aitraaz was a super hit and Naach was a super flop. Veer Zaara is a cult saga about undying love and everyone
could do with a dose of that in these cynical times of instant gratification. The music is one of the most melodious scores we have heard. The movie was
slow and very long and in spite of all this, the magical jodi of SRK and Preity turned Yash Chopra's directorial venture a smashing success. Naach was a movie
few people understood and it was probably ahead of its times. So, it sank. Priyanka's fantastic nymphomaniac turn, the thrilling pace, peppy music and
Akshay's chemistry with Kareena and Priyanka made Aitraaz a hit.
