Arshad Warsi says "Story and screenplay of Hum Tum Aur Ghost are mine"

Arshad Warsi Arshad Warsi admits he had differences with the director Kabeer Kaushik of his first production Hum Tum Aur Ghost. "Yes we did have differences. There were some scenes which I thought should've been shot differently. The post-production was done by the entire crew. But of course Kabeer Kaushik would get credit as director. But the story and screenplay were mine. So it was my vision to begin with."

Arshad Warsi admits he has hiked his price after the success of Ishqiya. But he isn't sure if he'd be paid what he's asking.

Says the actor, "I'd have asked for what I deserve even if Ishqiya hadn't worked. I'm finally asking for the price I deserve. I was completely underpaid earlier. I'll ask for a certain price now (Rs. 3 crores). If I don't get it I'll continue to be an underpaid actor for films I believe in. For example if I am asked to do a sequel to Ishqiya, I wouldn't ask for money. I haven't ever asked for money for the Munnabhai movies. If I feel the film helps me in any way as an actor I'll cut my price."

But Golmaal, Arshad feels is a commercial film and therefore should be lucrative for him. "Golmaal doesn't help the actors at all. It only helps the director. Munnabhai does help the actors. Even Dhamaal whose sequel I'm doing doesn't help actors. Golmaal and Dhamaal mean another hit for me. Nothing more."

Between Golmaal 3 and Dhamaal, Arshad is doing Mani Ratnam's assistant Bijoy Nambiar's gritty real-life drama. "After Golmaal 3, I'll do a small-budget film before going into Dhamaal. It's the kind of film that enthuses me as an actor. I play a cop in a real-life setting in Mumbai."

Arshad was almost not in Golmaal 3 because of the price factor, though he gives another reason for his near non-presence in Golmaal 3. "I needed a gap of at least two weeks between the last day of my own production and the first day of the shooting of Golmaal. After running around like a mad man for the promotion of Ishqiya and completing Hum Tum Aur Ghost, I really needed a break. I've had no chance to relax. But now I'm starting Golmaal 3 on the day after the release of Hum Tum Aur Ghost. So no respite. I really begged them for time off."

New releases open to empty houses

Empty cinema halls greeted the three key releases of the week - HUM TUM AUR GHOST, WELL DONE ABBA and MITTAL V/S MITTAL. The opening and noon shows were dismal at several centres. What comes as a surprise is that the films were well promoted prior to their release, especially HUM TUM AUR GHOST. But the poor numbers have come as a shocker. Let's hope the business picks up on Friday evening as well as on Saturday and Sunday.

First Look : Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge

Ajay Devgan’s comic timing in the recently released All The Best was outstanding. His next film Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge finds him playing a married couple with the hugely talented Konkona Sen Sharma and how an uninvited guest in Paresh Rawal exasperates them with his relentless over-stay in their house. Produced by Kumar Mangat and Amita Pathak, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has been written-directed by Ashwani Dhir who has a flair for devising fine comic moments. People are always waiting for a good clean comedy flick. It seems the audience may just over stay in this funny family drama.

Ashwani Dhir last outing was “One Two Three” Starring Sunil Shetty And Paresh Rawal which was average runner at boxoffice. Ashwani Dhir has also directed popular TV serial Office office.

Shahrukh khan to backup Always Kabhi Kabhi

Earlier we had it that Shah Rukh Khan has a production venture in his kitty. The movie is said to be titled ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ and will be a directorial debut of Roshan Abbas, who is an active theatre personality and radio guru.

‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ will be a launch pad for four new faces and among them will be Zoa, daughter of Karim Morani. Zoa is said to have earlier assisted noted filmmakers Farah Khan and Rajkumar Santoshi and also had played a blink-and-miss role in ‘Om Shanti Om’. On the other hand the movie will be produced by SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Cineyug’s Morani brothers. While the other cast of the movie are still to be finalised, the likes of Archana Puran Singh and Satish Shah are said to be in this.

However the director rubbishes the rumours of the movie to be based on social networking sites. “The film is an adaptation of a play I had written and directed way back in 1999 called ‘Graffiti’ about life at high school. That play was set in ‘99 and this film is set in 2009 so it’s but obvious that I would be having some elements which the youth of today connect with one of them being social networking sites such as Facebook. However, beyond that there is no real connection. The film is set in a high school and will try to capture the various emotions such as love, jealousy, pride that one goes through during school days. I believe some of the best days of our life are the ones that we spend in high school and it is this period of one’s life that the film will portray,” stated Roshan.

The music of ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ will be handled by Pritam whereas the shooting will start next month.

Happy New Year is modern: Farah Khan

After paying tributes to the 70's and 80's of Bollywood in Om Shanti Om and Main Hoon Naa, director Farah Khan has set her next film Happy New Year in a "modern and contemporary" world.

Happy New Year is not like my older films. It is a very modern film, very contemporary," Farah said when asked whether her third film would also carry the nostalgia of the 70s like her past films.

The movie, which is being produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment, will reunite the successful on screen pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone from Om Shanti Om.

"Happy New Year would definitely go on floors this year unlike what the grapevine has been. I am presently working on the script," said Farah.

The director, however, refused to divulge the story line of the much-delayed and much-awaited movie.

Despite her professional commitments, which include direction, choreography and judging reality shows, the 44-year-old choreographer-turned-director manages to spend maximum time with her one-year-old triplets.

"Most of the time, I am with my children. If I am shooting in a nearby studio like the Yashraj one, I bring them over to the shoot," explains Farah, who returns to the small screen as a judge of a new reality show - Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega.

"It is very interesting to find different people doing different things. There have been people who did some really crazy stuff on the show," says Farah, who has judged dance reality shows like Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.

After winning five Filmfare awards and a National Award in 2004 for choreographing Hrithik Roshan's Idhar chala main in Koi... Mil Gaya, Khan keeps her choreography assignments limited to the films of her friends like Karan Johar.

"I cannot say yes to anyone and everyone who asks me to choreograph his film. You have to accept that as a director I am more popular and successful. So I want to concentrate on making films now," she says while adding that she doesn't regret the fact that she is no more a full-time choreographer.

In her long career as the leading choreographer in the industry, Khan has made international artistes like Shakira and Kylie Minogue dance to her tunes.

"I think Hollywood stars do a lot of rehearsals. Kylie also practice a lot despite being such a big star. They are more cooperative and disciplined. But here in India, you can never expect that with a star," said Farah when asked to compare her experience with the two film industries.

Farah has also been roped in to choreograph a song in an Italian film called Oggi Spossi.

Salman passes on screen name Prem to Arbaaz

Bollywood star Salman Khan has found a new way to pass on his luck to younger brother Arbaaz Khan - by passing on his lucky screen name Prem.

The actor suggested that Arbaaz name his character Prem in his upcoming film "Prem The Game", where he plays the lead.

"Earlier, Arbaaz's character was called by a different name. But Salman suggested that he call his character Prem. So, Arbaaz changed his name to 'Prem'," said a source close to the actor.

Salman's character in 1989 hit "Maine Pyar Kiya" was called Prem and the actor never looked back since then. He later went on to do many films with the same character name as he considered the name lucky. Some of these movies were "Hum Saath-Saath Hain", "Biwi No.1" and "Chal Mere Bhai", among others.

Getting to know Kaminey...

Preview of Shahid and Priyanka's new film

Schedule to release on June 5, 2009, director Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest venture “Kaminey” stars Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra along with Amole Gupte.

“Kaminey” features Shahid Kapur in a double role for the first time in his career. He would be seen sporting a completely new bronzed and rugged look in the film.

Guddu and Charlie, Shahid's two characters in the film, are completely opposite from each other. While Charlie has a lisp, Guddu would be seen stammering.

An interesting aspect of “Kaminey” is the fresh pairing of Shahid and Priyanka Chopra. The two actors share screen space for the first time and there is immense curiosity about their on screen chemistry amid rumours of a real-life romance.

Priyanka, who is currently on a high after her award winning act in “Fashion” and “Dostana”, would be seen in a completely different get-up this time round.

She plays Sweety, a simple Maharashtrian girl, and hence would be seen dressed in simple Indian dresses. The actress has even spoken quite a lot of Marathi in the film.

Amole Gupte, who wrote the story and screenplay of “Taare Zameen Par” makes his acting debut with this film. Amole would be seen as a comical don called Bhope Bhau who has quite a menacing laugh.

Movie Review : Barah Aana, Firaaq, Lottery, Straight!!, Aaloo Chaat

Movie Review: Barah Aana
Rating: 60%

Barah Aana is a story that revolves around the friendship between a driver called Shukla (Naseeruddin Shah), a watchman Yadav (Vijay Raaz) and a waiter Aman (Arjun Mathur). Naseeruddin brings with him the maturity and dependency that you can expect from a man of his age. Raaz on the other hand is lazy and mischievous man who prefers life that is easy and laid back. And finally there is the young Arjun who is simply brimming with ambition and wants to make it in life.

Movie Review: Firaaq

Rating: 60%

I went to see Firaaq with really high expectations after all the stunning reviews it had got at various festivals. Alhough the film was a tad moving, it wasn’t as great as I expected it to be. But one thing is for sure that although you may not like it immediately after you see it but some images of it will remain with you long after.

Movie Review: Lottery
Rating: 20%

The film thoroughly disappoints. Abhijeet Sawant who makes his Bollywood debut in this film needs to stick to singing. There is a reason why he has been given a great voice – can he first make it completely in that sphere before he decides to turn to acting. And if he does want to act, can he learn how the art works first? Rucha Gujrati comes across as those teenage girls who dream of being an actress in Bollywood and will take any role that comes their way. That is a well thought of, good or even worth their while is completely forgotten. Let’s not even get into the remaining cast.

Movie Review: Straight!!
Rating: 20%

I will say that there were two things that did stand out. One was the acting of Anuj Chowdhury. With the right director and script, the boy can work. The other is the different locales where the film has been picturised in London. So in the current times of the credit crunch and lay offs, if you cant afford a trip, you can make yourself happy with the sights on screen!

Movie Review: Aaloo Chaat
Rating: 40%

As a part of the audience, I yawned through most of the film and was so restless all through out. I actually knew the end even before we got there because the script was so filled with the same situations that we have seen on so many occasions in so many movies that this film felt more like a hot pot of all those films.

Sushmita Don’t Want To Share Space With Ex-beau Randeep Hooda

Karma Aur Holi movie wallpaper

Karma Aur Holi movie wallpaper

A much awaited film Karma Aur Holi starring Sushmita Sen and Randeep Hooda is about to release. However Sushmita don’t want to promote it if Randeep will be a part of the promotional activities.

One source from the unit said, “The film is releasing after many glitches, so they had no choice but to go with Sushmita’s demands. Now interviews and events will have to be planned separately for Sushmita and Randeep.”

The reason behind this goes like this that Sushmita is hurt after Randeep refused to reunite when Sush wanted to rekindle their relationship. But Randeep denied the news and said, “That’s not true to my knowledge. Why don’t you ask Sushmita? Why are you asking questions about her to me?”

The film include many national and international actors like Suresh Oberoi, Rati Angihotri, Naomi Campbell, Vincent Pannetta, Sticky Fingaz and many other. It is due to release on March 6.

Comparing the Online Movie Rental Services

Online movie rental is gaining in popularity, but it’s still a short-term, imperfect solution. While we wait for technology to catch up with the far-reaching promises that we were told years ago (yes, I’m referring to broadband in every house and movies on demand), we’ll continue to see an even greater demand for online DVD rentals.

If you’re one of the many people who are contemplating signing up with one of these rental services, here are a few characteristics that you might want to keep in mind as you make your decision:

Fulfillment Centers: for added convenience, you will want to be sure that there is a fulfillment center near you. This can make the difference between a 1 to 2 day turnaround, and a 3 to 4 day turnaround. It might not sound like much, but being able to consistently gauge turnaround times is a great convenience (e.g. timing a new release to arrive on a Friday night).

DVD Selection: the breadth of movie selection is obviously important. Many movie watchers are only interested in new releases, but you should also consider what the inventory of TV series, classics, and movies from the past two decades is like You might be surprised to find yourself turning off cable because you can rent all of the best series from network television, Showtime, HBO, and more.

DVD Availability: A wide selection of movies is only one consideration — having enough copies of each title is also important. The number of copies of each movie will never be disclosed, but for the most part, the more popular the service, the deeper their selection. In this area, Netflix is generally considered to outrank Blockbuster.

Plan Selection: each rental service should have a plan that meets your needs, but some offer more flexibility than others. Examine your movie viewing habits and be sure your chosen rental service has a plan that fits.

Usability: as you build your rental list and look for movies to rent, you’ll start to appreciate more and more how easy a web site is to use. Looking at things like the ability to search and browse, ease of navigation, response times and availability of the site, etc. will have a major impact on your satisfaction with a service. I personally find this one of the top three factors for online DVD rental.

Reputation: you’re probably aware that two services dominate online movie rentals (Netflix and Blockbuster). But what you might not know is that there are plenty of other niche providers like Disney for children’s movies, DVD Empire, and other smaller providers. Unfortunately, many of these smaller services are smaller for a reason: they just don’t compare to the two big guns. To avoid any painful experiences, you should probably stick to the known entities.

Considering all of the factors above, there are really on two practical choices for a rental house, and those are Blockbuster and Netflix. To look at how each of these services up with each other, and to see which one’s best for you, check out the Netflix and Blockbuster review referenced below. It stacks the rental services up side-by-side, and can help make your decision much easier.

Dev D's new trauma: Abhay's no salesman

Abhay Deol’s Dev D is all set for release next week. But the hatke actor says he finds it difficult to promote his films. In fact he says he hates doing it.

“Can I risk saying that the part of films I hate most, is promoting it? It's not about the ego, it's not about projecting an image, it's not about being lazy or anything else you might think. The truth is, I love making movies but I just don't have it in me to sell them. I am an actor not a salesman, but most people seem to think that the two are one and the same,” writes Abhay on his blog, “I find promoting extremely tiring. It basically means I have to answer the same questions (and there are usually three at the most) a 1000 times, in the span of 8 to 9 hours. It usually goes like this - What is the film about? How was it working with the director? and Are you having/had an affair with the actress?”

Deol goes on to add that the real interest of the reporter lies in wanting to know about the actor’s love life rather than his work. “While they have to ask the first two questions, they are most interested in the third one and the rest of the interview almost always focuses on that. With a scandalous headline to match! No wonder most people perceive actors to be sex-starved maniacs.”

“I'm in this business because I love it. Besides the fact that I was never good at anything else, I actually find satisfaction at the end of a long day at the office (which could be anywhere within the country or the globe). I love entertaining people and taking them away from reality for the few hours that a film lasts. I love making them dig deep within their conscience and making them perhaps re-evaluate their lives or even their values. Most of all, I like being in someone else's shoes. It helps me understand myself that much more,” he adds.

The actor says that it is quite tough for to deal with all the attention as he is fiercely private about his life. “We live in a world that is obsessed with celebrity and celebrity lifestyle. I am a very private person and cringe at attention but if I don't get recognized then that simply means no one is watching my work. So recognition is essential but what I find hard to deal with is obsession. Nothing makes me happier than someone coming up to me and saying, "we saw your film and loved it", and nothing makes me blush more than someone wanting to take my picture and my autograph and my phone number,” he says.

And for all his detractors, Deol has a simple message. “I'm so tempted to write about my journey within the industry. About facing prejudice more than the average person, of trying to keep my individuality in the face of an industry that only wants to mould you in the image of a "hero". Of trying to do films that everyone says, "won't work", or with directors that the producers and distributors will not support. But it won't serve any purpose because five films down, that has become my strength and people and critics have responded positively. There are those who say that I have it easy because I am the only one doing the kind of films I do. I'd like them to try and get to do what I have done. If I am reaping the benefits today, it is only because I have been through the worst.”
