Karan Johar’s love-making scene with Priyanka

Karan Johar got the biggest shock of his life when Vishal Bhardwaj, director of the upcoming flick Saat Khoon Maaf approached him to enact a lovemaking scene with hottie Priyanka Chopra. Karan had to play the role of a psycho husband – a sex maniac of sorts – who beats his wife.

Karan is quoted as saying, “From what angle do I look like a wife-beater? And how could I enact a scene making love to Priyanka Chopra! And that too as a sex maniac! There is no way I could do this.”

On hearing the script, Karan, without thinking for a second, said no and the role went to Irrfan Khan.
Lol! I wonder how a sensitive director like Karan Johar look like, beating his wife.

We Are Family : Movie Review by Taran Adarsh

WE ARE FAMILY is a perfect family film with a good mix of emotions and humour. Plus, a brilliant climax, which will ensure that the film grows with a strong word of mouth. The last film which came close to being a family outing was PAA. Before that, the only quintessential family film was BAGHBAN. WE ARE FAMILY is the kind of film that should work instantly with ladies and when ladies watch such films, they bring their spouses and children along. Recommended!

Okay, WE ARE FAMILY is the official adaptation of Chris Columbus' STEPMOM [1998] and lots of us have already watched this Julia Roberts - Susan Sarandon starrer. Even otherwise, the story of a woman, diagnosed with a terminal illness, entrusting her kids to the 'other woman' before she does the final salute, gives the feeling of deja vu. But WE ARE FAMILY is not a tear-jerker. Sure, it has dollops of emotions, but also integrates the light moments wonderfully in those 12 reels.

In the good old days, in the 1960s and 1970s specifically, well-made family films struck an instant chord with viewers across the spectrum. But with the changing times, the quantum of well-made socials made a rapid decline. WE ARE FAMILY belongs to the Rajshri gharaana and tells the story of a family facing two life-changing developments: The woman of the house is diagnosed with a terminal illness and two, there's a stepmom on the scene. A difficult subject to handle, without doubt.

But debutant director Siddharth P. Malhotra surprises you constantly. Casting the best available talent for two pivotal parts and doing complete justice to their roles is tough. Very tough. But the ease with which he handles the tense moments between the women and also the emotional finale shows he has learnt his lessons well from his peers.

Final word? WE ARE FAMILY is for the family. It is well acted, deftly written, entertaining and broadly appealing drama. Watch it with someone you love!

Maya [Kajol] is the perfect mother. Her life revolves around her three children, Aleya [Aanchal Munjal], Ankush [Nominath Ginsberg] and Anjali [Diya Sonecha]. Despite being divorced from her husband Aman [Arjun Rampal], Maya has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her house, under her watch, and that they continue to remain a happy family unit.

When Aman introduces his girlfriend, Shreya [Kareena Kapoor], a career-oriented woman, the situation takes an unexpected turn. However, Maya is diagnosed with a terminal illness and circumstances bring the two women under the same roof. Can two mothers make a home?

With a plot like this, you expect WE ARE FAMILY to be an out-and-out serious outing. However, the film has its serious moments, but the director ensures that it doesn't come across as a gloomy and serious fare. In fact, the generous dose of light moments in the narrative keeps the drama fluid. There's an inherent sensitivity that the director brings in, which keeps you involved for most parts.

On the flip side, the film tends to stagnate in the middle of the second hour. One expects the story to move forward, but there's not much movement here [thankfully, the film picks up wonderfully towards the penultimate reels]. Also, the music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is a complete letdown. You feel it all the more because Dharma is synonymous with excellent music. The only redeeming track in the enterprise is 'Let's Rock', which is high on energy. S-E-L need to reinvent themselves by experimenting a little more.

Director Siddharth P. Malhotra handles the dramatic portions best. The tense moments between Kajol and Kareena, the confrontation between the two and also the cold stares that they exchange time and again have been captured very well. The gradual transformation in Kajol's looks, from striking and energetic to pale and morose, is also well projected. The finale is the best part of the enterprise and can be best described in one word: Outstanding. However, like I pointed out earlier, the writing could've been tighter towards the second hour.

Mohanan's cinematography is eye-catching and the locales of Australia only enhance the look of the film. Niranjan Iyengar's dialogue are decent at places, but a few lines are amazingly real. The background score [Raju Singh] is first-rate.

WE ARE FAMILY gives the two popular actresses an opportunity to sink their teeth into strongly drawn, juicy, challenging and interesting female roles that move beyond the normal stereotypes. The scene stealer is, without doubt, Kajol. She expresses the gamut of emotions brilliantly and speaks a million words even when silent. This is yet another incredible performance from an actor par excellence. Kareena excels yet again and her sequences with the kids are a delight. In fact, casting Kareena as the stepmom is just right, since she's the only actor who can stand up to Kajol in high-voltage scenes and that's because Kareena is a powerful actor herself. Arjun continues to surprise. ROCK ON, HOUSE FULL, RAAJNEETI and now WE ARE FAMILY indicates the growth of this actor. He handles the emotional moments well too. The kids - all three of them - are superb. In fact, the casting of the kids [done by Shanoo Sharma] is an ace.

Karan extends his holiday for 'Kites'

He'll be in New York for his buddy Hrithik's international premiere
Karan Johar has extended his holiday in New York to attend the premiere of Hrithik Roshan-starrer 'Kites' at Times Square today (May 16).

"It's a big film for the Roshans who are very close to me and Shah Rukh (Khan). The success of 'Kites' is also very important to the film industry. I've a release 'I Hate Luv Storys' coming up in July. And if 'Kites' works, it'd mean favourable things for my films," Karan told IANS over the phone from New York.

The Hindi version of Hrithik and Mexican actress Barbara Mori-starrer 'Kites' will have its worldwide release May 21, while the crisp and short English version, edited by Brett Ratner, will hit the screens May 28. The film is produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu. Reliance Big Pictures is distributing the movie.

Karan recently released the shortened version of his film 'My Name Is Khan' in New York, and the edited version of 'Kites' will also be screened there.

"New York is an important venue for Bollywood. Shortened version of 'My Name Is Khan' was released here last week. Now it's a shortened international version of 'Kites'. So we are working towards the same goal of takingBollywood to the West," said Karan.

Shah Rukh, who can't attend 'Kites' premiere as he's shooting for 'Ra.One', made sure his wife represents them both at this important occasion in the Roshans' life.

Gauri travelled to New York with Hrithik's better half Sussanne and they shopped before the grand premiere of 'Kites'.

"Gauri (Khan) and Sussanne Roshan are here. We're having the time of our lives. I am not thinking about work at all. Just enjoying myself," said Karan.

Incidentally, Karan had gone to New York with the express purpose of writing his next screenplay. But he has drawn a blank.

"At the moment I'm all geared for the 'Kites' premiere. I can't wait to see it," he said.

My Name is Khan Movie : Reviews by Taran Adarsh

MY NAME IS KHAN makes two strong statements...
  • The first: B.C. and A.D. are designations used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There's a third designation now - 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion and the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore.

  • The second statement: There're two sets of people in this world - the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs.

MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss this one!

MY NAME IS KHAN mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven't heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states - and states very strongly, without mincing words - Not all Muslims are terrorists.

Karan Johar's cinema got more real from KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA onwards. In MY NAME IS KHAN, the storyteller attempts to make a social statement and succeeds completely. At the same time, it takes no sides. If the protagonist says 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist', it also exposes those who misadvise the youth with inflammatory and rabble-rousing speeches.

Karan's take on the issue deserves the highest praise, since a subject like this is difficult to attempt. Final word? MY NAME IS KHAN is Karan, SRK and Kajol's best outing to date. Do I need to add anything more?

Rizvan Khan [Shah Rukh Khan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother [Jimmy Shergill] and sister-in-law [Sonya Jehan]. Rizvan, who has Asperger's syndrome, falls in love with Mandira [Kajol]. Despite protests from his brother, they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea-change.

When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they split. Rizvan is confused and upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America.

Let me alert you. The story unfolds feverishly from the very start itself. So if you miss a scene or two, chances are you would've missed some vital links in the story. The fact is, there's too much happening in the first half. Although the narrative tends to get leisurely-paced at times, the wheels continue to move from one episode to another.

A number of sequences are endearing. For instance, the romance between SRK and Kajol is subtle, yet charming. But it's SRK's relationship with Kajol and their kid that's one of the best parts of the movie. Your heart bleeds when an accident occurs and their lives are torn apart. Kajol's outburst - first, when her son meets with a catastrophe and second, when she confronts SRK - are truly shattering.

MY NAME IS KHAN's strength lies in the fact that you root for Khan all through. At the same time, you are weighed down when he's in a vulnerable situation, especially when he's labelled a terrorist and thrown behind bars. You don't realize it, but the fact is that you, as a spectator, have already got entwined in Rizvan and Mandira's lives.

There's a slight hitch in the second hour, when SRK returns to Georgia to save a hurricane-ravaged hamlet. Also, the media exercise tends to add to the length of the film. Nonetheless, it's a minor hiccup that doesn't rob the film of its punch.

There's just one word to illustrate Karan's direction - exemplary. One of the finest storytellers of our generation, he deserves brownie points for deviating from 'Karan Johar brand of cinema' and attempting a film that knocks on your heart and stimulates your mind. With MY NAME IS KHAN, Karan takes rapid strides as a storyteller.

Shibani Bathija's screenplay is truly arresting. Shibani and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are noteworthy and many a times, applaud-worthy. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is awe-inspiring. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music gels well with the nature of the film.

When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan, who has Asperger's syndrome. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Raj is passe, Rizvan it is.

Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could've matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol compliment each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It's a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress.

The film boasts of a number of capable actors, but the ones who leave a rock-solid impact are - in this order - Zarina Wahab, Sonya Jehan, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Mathur, Parvin Dabas and Arif Zakaria. Sugandha Garg is confident. Navneet Nishan supports well. Vinay Pathak leaves a mark in a brief role. Tanay Chheda [young SRK] and Yuvaan Makaar [SRK and Kajol's son Sameer] are excellent. The American actors, especially the kid who plays Sameer's friend, deserves mention.

On the whole, MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss this one!

Want to watch ‘My Name is Khan’ in peace? Come to Nepal

my name is khan new photo 200x275

Kathmandu, Even as India’s ultra-right party, the Shiv Sena, went on a rampage in Indian film capital Mumbai, attacking the cinema halls offering advance booking for the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan starrer “My Name Is Khan”, the Nepal distributor of the film said he fears no such trouble in the Himalayan republic.

“The Shiv Sena protest in India is not about the film. It’s about cricket. The Nepal screenings will not be affected,” the film’s Nepal distributor Nakim Uddin told IANS.

Directed by Karan Johar, “My Name Is Khan”, that has Kajol in the female lead, is scheduled to be screened in four multiplexes in Kathmandu along with smaller theatres in nearly a dozen towns outside Kathmandu valley from Friday when it releases worldwide.

However, unlike in India, where the Shiv Sena has trained its sights on the film due to Shah Rukh Khan defending Pakistan’s cricket players, in Nepal, the Sena’s sister organisation, the Nepal Shiv Sena, is unlikely to go on the warpath.

For Nakim Uddin, who incurred a loss with the Ram Gopal Varma directed and Bollywood titan Amitabh Bachchan-starrer “Rann” as well as Salman Khan starrer “Veer”, “My Name Is Khan” could be a profit-making venture.

The furore surrounding it in India may whet the theatregoer’s interest further.
Karan Johar’s earlier film “Kal Ho Naa Ho” did fairly well in Nepal, though his marital drama “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” bombed.

Nakim Uddin, who owns Jai Nepal and Kumari, the two best multiplexes in the capital, and a third in Bhaktapur with a fourth coming up, feels the review of the film by Bollywood Hungama – that has given the film a good rating – will push up viewership.

“It’s a film meant for the upper classes and will do well in the metropolis,” he predicts.
Besides Kathmandu, “My Name Is Khan” will also be screened at Pokhara, Birtamod, Damak, Biratnagar, Dharan, Raj Biraj, Birgunj, Narayanghat, Butwal and Nepalgunj.

Many of these towns are close to the Indian border and have a large percentage of Indian expatriates as well as visitors from India.

The new Bollywood blockbuster with Aamir Khan, “3 Idiots”, has been Nakim Uddin’s biggest profitable venture so far and is still being screened in his cinema halls.

Sena mobs attack theatres ahead of ‘My Name Is Khan’ release

shiv sena attacks cinemas 200x150Mumbai, Shiv Sena activists Tuesday went on a rampage and attacked several cinema halls that will screen Shah Rukh Khan’s “My Name Is Khan” despite the Mumbai Police assuring full security at the 63 cinemas and multiplexes that will showcase the movie.

Sena mobs attacked and damaged the booking windows of the Mehul Theatre in Mulund and staged noisy protests outside Shreyas Theatre in Ghatkopar, both in the suburbs, officials said.

Similarly, activists shouted slogans against Shah Rukh and “My Name Is Khan” outside the Huma Cinema in Kanjurmarg and the R-City Mall even as police promised tough measures to prevent any untoward incident during the release of the film directed by Karan Johar and starring Kajol with Shah Rukh Khan.

“My Name Is Khan” has been under the Shiv Sena scanner ever since superstar Shah Rukh made comments in favour of the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shah Rukh is co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders team. Not willing to settle for anything less than an apology from the star for his pro-Pakistani cricketers comments, the Sena also called him “a traitor”.

During the ongoing protests, posters and banners of the movie were torn or defaced and effigies of ‘King Khan’ were burnt in various parts of the state. Sena members also tore the screen in Metro Cinema in south Mumbai late Tuesday evening.

Acting swiftly, police arrested at least 40 Sena activists and booked them for unlawful assembly and rioting.
Earlier in the afternoon, director Karan Johar had called on Police Commissioner D. Shivanandhan and returned satisfied by the police security promised for the movie.

Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Himanshu Roy said anybody attempting to disrupt the film in any manner would be dealt with “very firmly”.

“We shall also frisk and search suspicious persons coming to view the movie to prevent any untoward incidents inside the cinema auditorium,” Roy told a packed news conference.

“We came here with the exhibitors to get a personal assurance from the police. We have an assurance from him that we shall be provided full protection at all places and locations where the movie shall be exhibited. There is no issue and it’s all fine,” Johar told reporters after the meeting.

Johar added that advance bookings for “My Name Is Khan” have already opened all over ahead of the scheduled release Friday.

The Sena violence came only days after the party unofficially dissociated itself from banning the movie release in the city.

However, on Tuesday, senior party leader and former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi reiterated in Nagpur that Shah Rukh must apologise for his remarks advocating the cause of Pakistani cricketers participating in the Indian Premier League.

His much awaited film is slated for a global release this Friday, including at 63 cinemas and multiplexes in Mumbai and another 250 across the state.

Both Chief minister Ashok Chavan and state Home Minister R.R. Patil have assured full protection for the smooth screening of the movie across Maharashtra.

Chavan, in fact, Tuesday declared that he would personally go and watch the movie along with his family.
As an extra precaution, the weekly off for most policemen has been cancelled to ensure that enough personnel are available for deployment on Friday.

Karan Johar: I want to make a movie on SRK and Gauri

Known for dishing out tearjerkers, Karan Johar says there is one love story he has hidden up his sleeve. And before you ask - of course, it involves Shah Rukh Khan, not just in reel life, but also in real life!
The acclaimed director says that some day, he wants to take the beautiful love story of his best friends SRK and Gauri to the silver screen.

"Shah Rukh and Gauri’s love story is really a Hindi picture love story. Truly, it is a film that I will make, and I will call it Shah Rukh – Gauri, and it will be a huge hit because it has everything! It has love, it has passion, it has parental rejection…it has triumph eventually and it has drama and humour!,” exclaims Karan.

“It really is a fantastic love story, and I know Shah Rukh has spoken about it many times. But I truly hope that when the book he has been working on comes out, you read it. And I have to tell you it is one of the most brilliant love stories you can ever know about,” he says with a smile, “But I think the best part is that that love story still continues!”

Now if KJo has such plans, we can’t help but ask him who will act in it. Will Kajol play Gauri?

“We’ll just love Aryan and Nysa to do it… two decades down the line!” he laughs.

Karan’s closeness to Shah Rukh and his missus Gauri is nothing new. On numerous occasions, Karan has said that he is family to them and vice versa. And, therefore, it comes as no surprise to us when we hear of his plans to make a film on the famous love story of the first family of Bollywood.

SRK wants some action

Shah Rukh has moved to the top of Bollywood by playing the charming lover in his movies. But, interestingly, the actor says that after his next release My Name is Khan,
he is concentrating on doing action movies.
SRK has Don 2 and Ra 1 lined up for 2010, and he can’t wait to get filming for them.

But why the need to do two action films back-to-back?

“I think, to a certain extent, I need to prove this to myself. That I can still do it. First with my back operation and then my shoulder… all of last year, I was recovering from my injuries. Now, I feel good, but I think I need to do these films to prove to myself,” says King Khan candidly.

Khan’s next film to go on the floors is Ra 1. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film will be shot entirely in London, and stars Kareena Kapoor too.

Ra 1 is a superhero film. I feel we don’t have an Indian superhero, and this movie is for the kids!” says Khan, “You know I love playing the baddie in movies. I haven’t done much of it.. but I really like that music in Don that plays in the background.”

But before SRK can move ahead to his next lot of films, he needs to face the reaction to the release of My Name is Khan. The film has already resulted in a huge controversy, but with just 4 days to release, the stress is beginning to show on the stars and the director alike.

“We just want the movie to release now. Of all the characters I have played, I think the one of Rizwan is closest to me. He has a lot of quirks that I have in real life… now just don’t ask me which ones!” he says with a smile that has melted our hearts for years now!

SRK Apology Rankles Sena, 89 Crores, K.Jo, Quiver…!

The escalating tension took a celeb toll. And SRK crumbled under the stress of the Sena communal ire, breaking down at a Press con.

His apology, however, was a far cry from the expected. "I am really sorry," Khan told an eager media."I would like to apologise to Kajol, Karan Johar and our business partners. The film is going to be affected because of what I said. 'My Name Is Khan,' is not my film alone. It has Kajol, Karan ( Johar) and 150 other people whose livelihood depends upon it."

King Khan, though, categorically refused apologising to the Sena. "I have done nothing wrong in saying what I did about the Pakistani players, and I said that as an Indian." Amid super tight security at the airport and at 'Mannat', SRK strode right back to Mumbai.

An estimated 89 crores are at stake, and the film's distributors have written to Bal Thackeray requesting his express permission before the flick's release. Reportedly, there has been no response from the Sena supremo as yet.

Incidentally, 'My Name Is Khan' will have to amass collections worth Rs 100 crore merely to break even. The prickly controversy has fuelled further interest in K Jo's movie, and as a topline trade analyst points out in a tabloid quote, "A controversy never backfires. Theatres taking down 'MNIK' posters have already made front page news and given the film more mileage than traditional publicity."

Silver lining to the darkest 'MNIK' cloud?
