Movie Review : Toonpur Ka Superrhero

TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO is a delightful and endearing kiddie movie. It has an engaging narrative [second half mainly], neat performances and adorable animated characters. The real stars are the technicians [who created the animated characters], the director [Kireet Khurana] and of course, its lead man [Ajay Devgn] who pulled off a technically remarkable achievement of having humans and animated film characters interact with each other. Revisit your childhood while watching this one!

Rating : 2/5

We Are Family : Movie Review by Taran Adarsh

WE ARE FAMILY is a perfect family film with a good mix of emotions and humour. Plus, a brilliant climax, which will ensure that the film grows with a strong word of mouth. The last film which came close to being a family outing was PAA. Before that, the only quintessential family film was BAGHBAN. WE ARE FAMILY is the kind of film that should work instantly with ladies and when ladies watch such films, they bring their spouses and children along. Recommended!

Okay, WE ARE FAMILY is the official adaptation of Chris Columbus' STEPMOM [1998] and lots of us have already watched this Julia Roberts - Susan Sarandon starrer. Even otherwise, the story of a woman, diagnosed with a terminal illness, entrusting her kids to the 'other woman' before she does the final salute, gives the feeling of deja vu. But WE ARE FAMILY is not a tear-jerker. Sure, it has dollops of emotions, but also integrates the light moments wonderfully in those 12 reels.

In the good old days, in the 1960s and 1970s specifically, well-made family films struck an instant chord with viewers across the spectrum. But with the changing times, the quantum of well-made socials made a rapid decline. WE ARE FAMILY belongs to the Rajshri gharaana and tells the story of a family facing two life-changing developments: The woman of the house is diagnosed with a terminal illness and two, there's a stepmom on the scene. A difficult subject to handle, without doubt.

But debutant director Siddharth P. Malhotra surprises you constantly. Casting the best available talent for two pivotal parts and doing complete justice to their roles is tough. Very tough. But the ease with which he handles the tense moments between the women and also the emotional finale shows he has learnt his lessons well from his peers.

Final word? WE ARE FAMILY is for the family. It is well acted, deftly written, entertaining and broadly appealing drama. Watch it with someone you love!

Maya [Kajol] is the perfect mother. Her life revolves around her three children, Aleya [Aanchal Munjal], Ankush [Nominath Ginsberg] and Anjali [Diya Sonecha]. Despite being divorced from her husband Aman [Arjun Rampal], Maya has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her house, under her watch, and that they continue to remain a happy family unit.

When Aman introduces his girlfriend, Shreya [Kareena Kapoor], a career-oriented woman, the situation takes an unexpected turn. However, Maya is diagnosed with a terminal illness and circumstances bring the two women under the same roof. Can two mothers make a home?

With a plot like this, you expect WE ARE FAMILY to be an out-and-out serious outing. However, the film has its serious moments, but the director ensures that it doesn't come across as a gloomy and serious fare. In fact, the generous dose of light moments in the narrative keeps the drama fluid. There's an inherent sensitivity that the director brings in, which keeps you involved for most parts.

On the flip side, the film tends to stagnate in the middle of the second hour. One expects the story to move forward, but there's not much movement here [thankfully, the film picks up wonderfully towards the penultimate reels]. Also, the music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is a complete letdown. You feel it all the more because Dharma is synonymous with excellent music. The only redeeming track in the enterprise is 'Let's Rock', which is high on energy. S-E-L need to reinvent themselves by experimenting a little more.

Director Siddharth P. Malhotra handles the dramatic portions best. The tense moments between Kajol and Kareena, the confrontation between the two and also the cold stares that they exchange time and again have been captured very well. The gradual transformation in Kajol's looks, from striking and energetic to pale and morose, is also well projected. The finale is the best part of the enterprise and can be best described in one word: Outstanding. However, like I pointed out earlier, the writing could've been tighter towards the second hour.

Mohanan's cinematography is eye-catching and the locales of Australia only enhance the look of the film. Niranjan Iyengar's dialogue are decent at places, but a few lines are amazingly real. The background score [Raju Singh] is first-rate.

WE ARE FAMILY gives the two popular actresses an opportunity to sink their teeth into strongly drawn, juicy, challenging and interesting female roles that move beyond the normal stereotypes. The scene stealer is, without doubt, Kajol. She expresses the gamut of emotions brilliantly and speaks a million words even when silent. This is yet another incredible performance from an actor par excellence. Kareena excels yet again and her sequences with the kids are a delight. In fact, casting Kareena as the stepmom is just right, since she's the only actor who can stand up to Kajol in high-voltage scenes and that's because Kareena is a powerful actor herself. Arjun continues to surprise. ROCK ON, HOUSE FULL, RAAJNEETI and now WE ARE FAMILY indicates the growth of this actor. He handles the emotional moments well too. The kids - all three of them - are superb. In fact, the casting of the kids [done by Shanoo Sharma] is an ace.

Kajol pitches in to help Bebo for we are family

Kareena Kapoor will not have to handle the promotional events of We Are Family on her own. Her co-star Kajol will be helping out too, despite being in the advanced stage of pregnancy. Kajol is recording interviews promoting the film this week itself. These interviews will be aired before the film's release.

Kajol was not expected to be able to handle the promotional events as they will be held around the time of the film's release on September 10, which in turn, is very near Kajol's expected date of delivery. So Kareena was expected to promote the film on her own, but now Kajol has decided she will share Bebo's burden.

We Are Family, the official remake of the Hollywood film Stepmom, also stars Arjun Rampal. It is produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and directed by Siddharth P Malhotra.

Mums, listen to your kids: Kajol

Bollywood has some and then a few more. Yummy mummies, we mean. But we chose the lovely actress Kajol to be TOI’s guest editor for this special Mother’s Day issue.

Not because she’s acting in Karan Johar’s Stepmom that will release later this year. But because she’s the only actress who twice in her hugely successful career has unselfishly stepped back from the top to gladly accept motherhood.

The first time after daughter Nysa, Kajol returned in 2006 to win the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Fanaa opposite Aamir Khan. Then this year, just after another stunning performance in My Name Is Khan with her favourite co-star Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol completed Stepmom and settled down to her second baby. It must take some doing. The actress, however, dismissed the putting-career-on-hold and making-a-comeback theory with a toss of her auburn hair.

“Your career is part of your life, your family is part of your life, and your whole life — your personality — is made of every part put together. It’s upto you to strike the right balance,” she said. “I learned from example. My own mother (the actress Tanuja) always put her family first. Even when she was working, we were her top priority, she gave us quality time — when she was there, she was with us 120 per cent. I’m lucky to have had her. And I hope to be like her...”

She’s glowing with the early stages of pregnancy, and she’s comfortable with her condition, she made no fuss about the great commute from her home to our office in peak summertime to take the chair for this issue. Dressed casually in a loose white top and black trousers, feet encased in soft slippers, she slipped into the role emphatically... brown eyes flashing with expression, fists thumping the table to make a point. When coffee and sandwiches were placed before her, Kajol’s face lit up. “I’m so pregrant, aren’t I,” she giggled.

She was unhappy with Mother’s Day, per se. “Mothers are fab and kids bring out the best in women,” she said, “but you can’t relegate your relationship with your mother to just one day in a year. For a child, the mother is God... the mother has the same responsibility to her child as God has to the world. And just as you wake up each morning and worship God whether you’re 14 or 40, you should respect your mother... even when you are grown up, in complete control of your life and are probably looking after her.”

And she had a word of caution for troubled mothers in today’s society of suicidal children: “They should listen to their kids... a mother’s gift to her kid should be the power of speech. Don’t be impatient. Don’t close yourself to your child by expecting her/him to be what you want them to be. Your message to them should be, ‘I love you for what you are and will support you whether you pass or fail your exams.’ Mothers should also stop to consider what they would do if their kid was suddenly taken away from them today. I would die! Compared to that, you can make make every situation work...”

There were more tidbits from this mother and mother-to-be even while she discussed work (“I’m a nice boring person, you won’t get gossip on me!”), babies, motherhood, growing up, families (“they teach you and make you who you are”), the need to discipline kids (“spanking is not bad as a means to get attention... it’s not the punishment, that’s much worse, and devious”) and pregnancy itself (“don’t become a mother unless you’re ready, don’t let this decision be thrust on you, because then everybody will suffer... especially your child”).

Plus, a final word of advice to mothers: “Advice itself is bad, don’t be weighed down by what society says your kid ought to be doing, rely on your own instincts and decisions. As a mother, you know what’s best for your kid, by learning, by instinct, by habit... And, practise what you preach. Your kid learns by watching you. In future, your child takes reference from you.” We had just one question for Kajol, did she subscribe to the public opinion that she wasBollywood’s yummy mummy? “Absolutely,” she declared, giving the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai smile, “I was yummy even before I had my baby!”

My Name is Khan Movie : Reviews by Taran Adarsh

MY NAME IS KHAN makes two strong statements...
  • The first: B.C. and A.D. are designations used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There's a third designation now - 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion and the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore.

  • The second statement: There're two sets of people in this world - the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs.

MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss this one!

MY NAME IS KHAN mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven't heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states - and states very strongly, without mincing words - Not all Muslims are terrorists.

Karan Johar's cinema got more real from KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA onwards. In MY NAME IS KHAN, the storyteller attempts to make a social statement and succeeds completely. At the same time, it takes no sides. If the protagonist says 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist', it also exposes those who misadvise the youth with inflammatory and rabble-rousing speeches.

Karan's take on the issue deserves the highest praise, since a subject like this is difficult to attempt. Final word? MY NAME IS KHAN is Karan, SRK and Kajol's best outing to date. Do I need to add anything more?

Rizvan Khan [Shah Rukh Khan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother [Jimmy Shergill] and sister-in-law [Sonya Jehan]. Rizvan, who has Asperger's syndrome, falls in love with Mandira [Kajol]. Despite protests from his brother, they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea-change.

When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they split. Rizvan is confused and upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America.

Let me alert you. The story unfolds feverishly from the very start itself. So if you miss a scene or two, chances are you would've missed some vital links in the story. The fact is, there's too much happening in the first half. Although the narrative tends to get leisurely-paced at times, the wheels continue to move from one episode to another.

A number of sequences are endearing. For instance, the romance between SRK and Kajol is subtle, yet charming. But it's SRK's relationship with Kajol and their kid that's one of the best parts of the movie. Your heart bleeds when an accident occurs and their lives are torn apart. Kajol's outburst - first, when her son meets with a catastrophe and second, when she confronts SRK - are truly shattering.

MY NAME IS KHAN's strength lies in the fact that you root for Khan all through. At the same time, you are weighed down when he's in a vulnerable situation, especially when he's labelled a terrorist and thrown behind bars. You don't realize it, but the fact is that you, as a spectator, have already got entwined in Rizvan and Mandira's lives.

There's a slight hitch in the second hour, when SRK returns to Georgia to save a hurricane-ravaged hamlet. Also, the media exercise tends to add to the length of the film. Nonetheless, it's a minor hiccup that doesn't rob the film of its punch.

There's just one word to illustrate Karan's direction - exemplary. One of the finest storytellers of our generation, he deserves brownie points for deviating from 'Karan Johar brand of cinema' and attempting a film that knocks on your heart and stimulates your mind. With MY NAME IS KHAN, Karan takes rapid strides as a storyteller.

Shibani Bathija's screenplay is truly arresting. Shibani and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are noteworthy and many a times, applaud-worthy. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is awe-inspiring. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music gels well with the nature of the film.

When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan, who has Asperger's syndrome. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Raj is passe, Rizvan it is.

Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could've matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol compliment each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It's a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress.

The film boasts of a number of capable actors, but the ones who leave a rock-solid impact are - in this order - Zarina Wahab, Sonya Jehan, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Mathur, Parvin Dabas and Arif Zakaria. Sugandha Garg is confident. Navneet Nishan supports well. Vinay Pathak leaves a mark in a brief role. Tanay Chheda [young SRK] and Yuvaan Makaar [SRK and Kajol's son Sameer] are excellent. The American actors, especially the kid who plays Sameer's friend, deserves mention.

On the whole, MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss this one!

Want to watch ‘My Name is Khan’ in peace? Come to Nepal

my name is khan new photo 200x275

Kathmandu, Even as India’s ultra-right party, the Shiv Sena, went on a rampage in Indian film capital Mumbai, attacking the cinema halls offering advance booking for the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan starrer “My Name Is Khan”, the Nepal distributor of the film said he fears no such trouble in the Himalayan republic.

“The Shiv Sena protest in India is not about the film. It’s about cricket. The Nepal screenings will not be affected,” the film’s Nepal distributor Nakim Uddin told IANS.

Directed by Karan Johar, “My Name Is Khan”, that has Kajol in the female lead, is scheduled to be screened in four multiplexes in Kathmandu along with smaller theatres in nearly a dozen towns outside Kathmandu valley from Friday when it releases worldwide.

However, unlike in India, where the Shiv Sena has trained its sights on the film due to Shah Rukh Khan defending Pakistan’s cricket players, in Nepal, the Sena’s sister organisation, the Nepal Shiv Sena, is unlikely to go on the warpath.

For Nakim Uddin, who incurred a loss with the Ram Gopal Varma directed and Bollywood titan Amitabh Bachchan-starrer “Rann” as well as Salman Khan starrer “Veer”, “My Name Is Khan” could be a profit-making venture.

The furore surrounding it in India may whet the theatregoer’s interest further.
Karan Johar’s earlier film “Kal Ho Naa Ho” did fairly well in Nepal, though his marital drama “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” bombed.

Nakim Uddin, who owns Jai Nepal and Kumari, the two best multiplexes in the capital, and a third in Bhaktapur with a fourth coming up, feels the review of the film by Bollywood Hungama – that has given the film a good rating – will push up viewership.

“It’s a film meant for the upper classes and will do well in the metropolis,” he predicts.
Besides Kathmandu, “My Name Is Khan” will also be screened at Pokhara, Birtamod, Damak, Biratnagar, Dharan, Raj Biraj, Birgunj, Narayanghat, Butwal and Nepalgunj.

Many of these towns are close to the Indian border and have a large percentage of Indian expatriates as well as visitors from India.

The new Bollywood blockbuster with Aamir Khan, “3 Idiots”, has been Nakim Uddin’s biggest profitable venture so far and is still being screened in his cinema halls.

Not Shahrukh, Kajol's bonding with another actor

kajol_1_310When it comes to Bollywood, nobody knows what's in store, same can be said about the sweet bonding between two celeb parents Akshay Kumar and Kajol.

Apparently both Akshay and Kajol's kids study in the same school, and the two, who met at an event children's school, have been bonding bigtime.

The bonding is nothing but a friendly chit-chat, which regular parents have together about their beloved kids.

Ajay Devgan - from action to comedy

Ajay Devgan, who made his debut with the Madhoo-starrer Phool Aur Kaante, has indeed come a long way. He, who used to be the angry, young man of action films, is now turning to comedy, that too in a big way.
Ajay DevgnAjay’s last three comedies Golmaal, Golmaal Returns and All The Best were well received, and his performance was appreciated. The two-time National Award-winning actor is now overwhelmed with offers for comic performances. His upcoming flick Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? with Paresh Rawal and Konkona Sen Sharma is a comedy as well.  The promos of the film have generated a lot of curiosity, and audiences are eagerly awaiting it.

According to Ashwni Dhir, who has directed Ajay in Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?, Ajay is a ‘first-rate actor’ who is ‘a natural in front of the camera’, and does comedy just as well as action.

Ajay is excited about his next. ‘I agreed to Atithi... almost minutes after I heard the first draft of the script, because to me, this film fit into that genre of Hrishida’s films. Films like Chupke Chupke, Bawarchi, Rajnigandha, Khubsoorat, Angoor and Golmaal (Amol Palekar) made by stalwarts like Hrishida, Basuda and Gulzar saab tickled your funny bone, but they also had a soul, ‘ he says. Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? is slated for release worldwide on March 5, 2010.
On his new role as a comic actor, Ajay says, ‘Believe me, every time I say I will run away from comedy, comedy chooses me. After Atithi... I’ll plunge headlong into Golmaal-3. Sometimes, I think actors don’t choose a role, a role chooses them. When you deliberately resist something, it has a way of following you.’ ‘Amitabh Bachchan was an angry young man and then did some delectable comedies. I was the action guy who went into comedy. Though I keep saying I want to get back to action flicks, I will trust my instincts and accept a good comedy if it comes my way,’ he adds, ‘An actor proposes, a filmmaker disposes.’
Ajay has a bouquet of varied flowers before him, as far as his upcoming films are concerned. He has Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti, Toonpur Ka Superhero with wife Kajol, Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A time In Mumbai, Kumar Mangat’s Garam Hawa and Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 3 coming up.

Move over Bollywood, the new King of Comedy is coming!

Tweeting Tattle Pains Kajol!

After SRK, it's his svelte star who earned a note of negativity… and twitter is presently giving the heebie jeebies to Kajol. Reportedly, a tweet from an account labelled '@kajolnysa' has proved to be the fountainhead of worry.
The tweet said, "@ all mumbaikars, Dont worry people, even chengez khan cant stop MNIK release, relax and let all your positive energy flow here."

Refuting the allegation, a distressed Kajol voiced her sentiments to the scribe tribe stating, "Those comments on twitter are NOT me. It is a fake ID. I have not commented on Twitter on any issues. I am not on Twitter."
