Amitabh Bachchan to make a guest appearance in a Rajinikanth movie. Apart from Mr Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth the film will also feature Rekha, Vidya Balan and Deepika Padukone.

Andha Kanoon, Giraftar and Hum, the three films where the two superstars were seen together were super hits. Lets see how this one performs at the Box office when apart from watching the superstars together; it may give you a chance to watch Mr. Bachchan and Rekha in the same frame.

The superstar of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan and the biggest star of down South Rajinikanth will be seen together as Mr Amitabh Bachchan makes a guest appearance in the upcoming film Rana, the next film of the Southern superstar. The two superstars of India will work together after 20 years.

But before you get too excited, you need too understand that it is expected that Mr. Amitabh Bachchan’s role in the film will be rather small. This is because when there is very little scope for any other actor even if Rajinikanth has one role in the film, what will happen when he has a triple role in the film?

May be even the makers of Rana understand that point. They have already made it clear that Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has a very small role in the film and will not have a full-fledged role.

Though Mr Bachchan and Rajinikanth haven’t been seen together in many films, they have a lot of mutual admiration for each-other. This was seen when the superstar from South went out of his way to congratulate Mr. Amitabh Bachchan on his performance and success of Paa. At that point, Rajinikanth had said Mr. Amitabh Bachchan sets standards that others follow.

'Robot' smashes all records Rs 117cr within a week

Rajinikanth starrer 'Endhiran' has netted a collection of Rs 117 crore, surpassing the first-week collection of Bollywood's highest first-week grosser 'Dabangg' (Rs 82 crore).

Distributor and trade analyst Suniel Wadhwa said, ''The film has got a net collection of Rs 60 crore in TN, Rs 30 crore in AP, Rs 8 crore in Karnataka, Rs 4 crore in Kerala and Hindi version Robot Rs 15 crore. Looking at the trend the film has crossed Dabangg's two weeks net collection in its first week itself.''

'Endhiran' opened in 2,200 screens as compared to 1,400 for 'Dabangg'. An industry source said, ''More than one-and-half times extra screens means the revenue earned is nearly four times extra and that is also helping the film. Also about 92% of cinema halls are running the film and the collection continue to be rock steady.''

The film's report in the Hindi belt too is quite good. Distributor Sunil Bohra said, ''The collection of the film in places like Jodhpur, Ghaziabad, and Meerut continue to remain steady and the film is doing well both in single screen and multiplexes across states.''

Industry sources said since the entertainment tax structure was different in the south, it is difficult to get the gross box office collection. But they said the film had definitely grossed Rs 260 crore which was more than the entire collection of Aamir Khan starrer 'Ghajini'. Bohra said, ''The film has easily made a gross collection of Rs 200 crore plus which is nearly double of Dabangg.''

The Hindi version of the film Robot too has done a business of nearly Rs 30 crore in the first week. Amod Mehra said, ''Robot has broken all the norms of a dubbed film. I don't remember any dubbed film crossing even the one crore mark."

ROBOT is a crowd-pleasing and hugely mass appealing tale of android revolution with a thrilling plot, rich and imaginative screenplay, super action, astounding effects and most importantly, Rajnikant, who is the soul of the film. It's the Big Daddy of all entertainers. Miss it at your own risk!

ROBOT, directed by Shankar, is a Rajnikant Express that transports you to a world you can't envision. Rajnikant's feats are legendary by now.

In ROBOT, he goes a step further. The Robot in ROBOT not only follows orders of his creator, but also cooks, fights, romances and wonder of wonders, has a lengthy conversation with a mosquito and scan loads of books/magazines and an entire telephone directory in a second. Yes, you read it right!

That's not all, this Robot is Superman + Spiderman + Terminator + Godzilla, all rolled into one. There's more to this Robot. It can replicate itself, wage a vicious battle, turn into an Anaconda or a monster ball and wipe off an entire army. Whew! Known for larger than life canvas, ROBOT is Shankar's most expensive and if I may say so, his most imaginative film thus far. And who better than Rajnikant for the pivotal role!

Final word? A Rajnikant film is an event and this combo's [Shankar - Rajnikant] new outing ROBOT is sure to strike like Tsunami. Let me make it short-n-sweet. If you miss ROBOT, it's YOUR loss!

Location: Chennai 2010. Mission: Creating a robot Chitti. Purpose: To help the society. Development time: 10 years. Special Features: A human who is not born, but is created. He can dance, sing, fight, is water and fire resistant. He can do all that a human can and more. He feeds on electricity. He takes instructions literally. Where a human can lie to save himself, this robot cannot lie.

Where he has a razor sharp memory and can memorize an entire telephone directory by just running through the pages, he cannot understand human emotions. Dr. Vasi upgrades Chitti's processor and simulates human emotions without realizing the repercussions. Chitti gets transformed. He can now feel and the first feeling that he discovers is Love. Will this love come in the way of Dr. Vasi's purpose of creating Chitti? Will Dr. Vasi's own creation destroy him?

A title like ROBOT automatically puts tremendous responsibility and pressure on the director's shoulders. And ROBOT is not merely a display of VFX, but it also has soul, a story to tell. At first, ROBOT comes across as a clash between the virtuous [Rajnikant] and wicked [Danny Denzongpa]. But ROBOT changes gears in its post-interval portions as the focus shifts to the creator [Rajnikant] and his creation [Rajnikant].

It's a Rajnikant film and it would be incomplete if his loyal fans don't get to watch his stylish actions and feats. Thankfully, ROBOT showcases it all. He can glide on the railway tracks, run horizontally on a moving train, transform into an Anaconda, can swallow helicopters and even fire at people with his fingers, without using a pistol. These are truly clap-trap moments!

Even otherwise, the screenplay is really well penned and absorbing. While the film is a super ride from start to end, it's the penultimate 25 minutes that leaves you awe-struck and speechless. You can't imagine a Hindi film having such an out of the world climax. There will be pandemonium inside theatres when the climax unfolds, I am sure. Let me confess, it's the mother of all climaxes!

Only thing, Shankar could've controlled the length of the film. It could've been shorter by at least 10 to 15 minutes, which includes doing away with a song or two. Of course, like all Shankar movies, the songs are filmed most imaginatively on exotic locales, but what's the point of having songs if they act as speed breakers?

That Shankar ranks amongst India's best directors is well known by now and ROBOT only cements the fact.

His vision and execution of the difficult subject deserves the highest praise, in fact distinction marks. He not only dreams big, but the outcome is incredible too. A.R. Rahman's music doesn't compliment the content of the film, but like I pointed out earlier, every song has been filmed exquisitely. The action and chase sequences are outstanding [Yuen Woo Ping, action choreographer in the MATRIX and KILL BILL sequels, was the stunt coordinator]. Visual effects are spectacular [Stan Winston Studio, the studio behind JURASSIC PARK, PREDATOR, TERMINATOR, IRON MAN, AVATAR, provided the animatronics technology]. Cinematography captures the grand production values with precision. The locations of Austria, Machu Picchu in Peru, U.S.A. and Brazil only enhance the visual appeal of the film. The sets are mind-blowing. Dubbing is near-perfect.

ROBOT is a Rajnikant show from start to end. And no other actor, not from Bollywood at least, would be able to do what he does with such amazing ease. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks stunning and acts most convincingly. Danny Denzongpa is efficient, as always. The remaining actors enact their parts well.

On the whole, ROBOT is a crowd-pleasing and hugely mass appealing tale of android revolution with a thrilling plot, rich and imaginative screenplay, super action, astounding effects and most importantly, Rajnikant, who is the soul of the film. It's the Big Daddy of all entertainers. Miss it at your own risk!

Rajnikant & SRK both remaking the Malayalam super hit Katha Parayumbol.

It could be by default and not by design. Or sheer coincidence that South superstar Rajnikant and Bollywood’s heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan are both remaking the Malayalam super hit Katha Parayumbol. While Rajnikant is currently in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Filmcity shooting non-stop for the Tamil version titled Kuselan, which is scheduled for an August 15, 2008 release; Shah Rukh is working overtime shooting for Katha Parayumbol’s Hindi version, Billoo Barber which also stars Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta, at Mumbai’s Film City.

Rajnikant’s leading ladies Nayantara and Meena; the film’s protagonist Pashupati and director P Vasu have made Hyderabad their home for the next month.
SRK’s home production is also expected to hit theatres in the same week as the Rajnikant film, perhaps even on the same day.

A trade source in Chennai says, “If Shah Rukh’s Billoo Barber releases on the same day as Rajnikant’s Kuselan, then the Hindi dubbed version of Kuselan will be affected. After all both films have an identical story line.”

It must be mentioned here that Rajnikant’s Sivaji-The Boss which released in June last year, was a superhit in Maharashtra. And the film’s box office success made many distributors in Mumbai sit up and take notice of Rajni’s popularity even outside of Tamil Nadu.

On the face of it, Rajnikant and Shah Rukh have never had an issue. In fact, the only room for discord between the two superstars must have been when Rajnikant won the title of entertainer of the year from a television channel last year.

And Shah Rukh, who was present at the occasion, asked Rajni how he managed the title.

Rajni took Shah Rukh’s question in good humour but in his thank you speech, the Southern superstar, who is a die-hard Amitabh Bachchan loyalist, had said, “There will be many Badshahs but there is only one Shahenshah.” Rajni’s comment was obviously pitting SRK against Amitabh.

This jibe is said to have caused a little stress between the two superstars.

Again by default, when Shah Rukh walked out of filmmaker Shankar’s I-Robot, Rajnikant bailed Shankar out by agreeing to act in I-Robot.

Although Rajnikant as well as Shah Rukh have not dignified the rumours suggesting that there is any stress between them, Chennai is abuzz with stories of how the two actors are engaged in a cold war.

Theatre owner and leading Tamil distributor in Maharashtra, Nambi Rajan says, “Rajnikant is a legend. There is so much excitement for Kuselan though its release is nearly three months away.”

Rajan also feels that it is unfair to compare Billoo Barber with Kuselan because both films will cater to a different set of audience.

Tamil industry sources add that P Vasu, the director of Kuselan has made many changes in the screenplay and his film will not be a direct lift from the Malayalam movie.

On the other hand, Priyadarshan’s Billoo Barber will bear a close resemblance to the Malayalam original.

However a skeptic adds, “All said and done, Kuselan and Billoo Barber are based on the same movie. And there are bound to be comparisons.”

I want to work with Rajni sir, yaar: Aishwarya Rai

Mumbai, (IANS) The much sought after Aishwarya Rai, who has been turning down movies for more than just lack of time, says she refused Karan Johar's comedy "Dostana" because the quirky situations mentioned in the script wouldn't have worked.

Karan wanted to cast her with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham. He has now roped in Priyanka Chopra for the female lead.

"I opted out of 'Dostana' because the inter-personal relationships among the three of us made me uncomfortable. Now that Abhishek and I are married, the kind of quirky situations shown in 'Dostana', albeit in a comic vein, wouldn't have worked," Aishwarya told IANS in an interview.

When asked why she accepted superstar Rajnikanth starrer "Robot", Aishwarya said: "I want to work with Rajni sir, yaar. He is phenomenal. Everyone speaks of this experience. I'll actually go through the experience. It's very important for me to come away with something from my films since I give so much."

The film is directed by Shankar, who gave Aishwarya her first break in "Jeans".

"It's a total Rajni-Shankar styled entertainer. There's no logic as to why I agreed to do it beyond the urge to work with Rajnikanth. Shankar and Rajni sir have approached me for so many films, it's embarrassing."

Excerpts from an interview:

Q: First things first. Did you turn down Karan Johar's "Dostana"?

A: Yes, I opted out of "Dostana" because the inter-personal relationships among the three of us made me uncomfortable. Now that Abhishek and I are married, the kind of quirky situations shown in "Dostana", albeit in a comic vein, wouldn't have worked."

Q: But "Dhoom 2" and "Jodhaa Akbar" worked although you were paired with Hrithik Roshan and not Abhishek? A: But "Dhoom" was before marriage and there was no triangle in "Jodhaa Akbar". Now the audience can't see me sharing my affections for Abhishek with another guy. I can't tell you why it wouldn't have worked for Abhishek and I as a pair without giving away the plot. Karan Johar wasn't bothered with all these personal considerations, but I felt otherwise. I thought the audience would wonder, "She likes John and Abhishek equally? No way!"

Q: Now you'll be romancing Rajnikanth in Shankar's "Robot"?

A: It's a total Rajni-Shankar styled entertainer. There's no logic as to why I agreed to do it beyond the urge to work with Rajnikanth. Shankar and Rajni sir have approached me for so many films, it's embarrassing. Ever since we did "Jeans" together Shankar has approached me for all his films except "Boys".

Rajni sir, being the senior that he is, has shown no egoistic traits in approaching me for his last four-five films. And my refusal to do his films was never misconstrued by him. I admire him for that. It speaks volumes for his seniority and his calibre as a human being to never take offence to my no."

Q: Is that why you said yes to "Robot"?

A: This time for "Robot" it was an immediate yes from me. I just wanted to work with Rajni sir and Shankar. My "Jeans" with Shankar was a super success. I learnt so much from "Jeans" and Shankar. "Robot" too will be a learning experience.

Q: Is it a sci-fi film?

A: It is hard to define. But technically it will take cinema to another level. I can only say I'll come away enriched. It's very important for me to come away with something from my films since I give so much. I want to work with Rajni sir, yaar. He's phenomenal. Everyone speaks of this experience. I'll actually go through the experience.

Q: Well you have a seasoned phenomenon (Amitabh Bachchan) in your own house.

A: Yes, but I share a different equation with the one in my house. They're both institutions. And I'm blessed to work with both. When I look back at all the leading men, directors and technicians I've worked with I feel totally blessed. It's a good place to be in.
