Leni aka Chanda's character seems inspired by the victim of the Delhi Public School (DPS) MMS Scandal case which took place in 2004.
The official website of the movie says, "Leni is a spoilt brat school girl with hyperactive hormones and a penchant for adventure. After a devastating MMS scandal, she is abandoned by her family and forced into isolation. As a runaway, she finds shelter with Chunni, a pimp and develops an alter-ego, Chanda who is a high profile escort by night while Leni is a college student by day. With coke in her head and money in her hands, Leni/Chanda lives life on her own terms, no holds barred."
On the Lust line she says, "In school I was a really naughty girl. I hated all subjects except Biology, if you know what I mean. I never studied for my exams but the teachers were satisfied with my orals." The Lust Line is available on the website in four different languages for people above 18 years of age.
The similarities between Leni and the MMS scandal case victim are too many to be a coincidence. The character in Dev D is said to sexually active during school and gets caught in an MMS scandal as a result of her adventurous activities. The DPS school girl was similar in nature. Moreover after the case, the girl involved in the MMS scandal was reportedly sent abroad while Leni is abandoned by her family in the movie after having bought a lot of shame to their families.
Dev D is a modern take on Devdas. While the love story of Paro and Dev remains the same, instead of prostitute Chandramukhi, high profile escort and hotline girl Chanda takes her place. Devdas became an alcoholic but Dev becomes a drug addict as the film is based in contemporary urban India. Firang actress Kalki Koechlin plays femme fatale Chanda, Abhay Deol plays Dev and Punjabi actress Mahi Gill plays Paro.
Anurag Kashyap was unavailable for comment. The spokesperson for the film says, "Leni's character is not based on the DPS MMS scandal case. We are not trying to say that this is what happened to the DPS girl. It is not inspired from it at all. Leni is a just a girl with hyperactive hormones and that is why she was involved in the MMS case."
